Stability testing
at Deltares.

3 July 2024

In November 2024, we were chosen to test the stability of the Nodes in the test basin of Deltares, as a result of being one of the winning contenders of the SME challenge 2023.

Winning this challenge was a proud moment for Mecal as our hard work had paid off: External parties are now putting their trust in our product!

The goal of the test was to assess the structural integrity of the Mecal Nodes. In Deltares’ water basin we were able to simulate heavy hydrodynamic conditions to a level that rarely occurs in the North Sea. The results show that our design behaves well in these extreme sea conditions and can be safely added to scour protection, bringing us one step closer to helping create better marine life in wind farms!

Design & production of scaled models

An essential step to successfully testing the Mecal Nodes was engineering scaled models with identical properties to the real-sized product. Through methodic tests we found a method in which we were able to produce a scaled model in-house, that maintains the density and shape complexity in the scaled product.

Thanks to our efficient production method, we were able to produce over 22 000 scaled Nodes! Not only did this allow us to test the stability of the Nodes in various set ups, we also learned a lot about designing and producing scaled models.
